Abstracts from surveyor's field notes of land contained in Northwestern District, transcribed December 1850.

Abstracts were prepared by Surveyor General's office from Federal land surveyor's [sic] field notes, RS 953.005, for use in Northwestern Land District Office. The method of marking each corner of an exterior section or quarter section or an interior section or quarter section is specified. The method most frequently used was either post in mound or witness tree described by species, diameter, directional bearing and distance from actual corner. When bodies of water are found in township abstract also includes rough plat.

The Northwestern Land District Office was created at Galena by Congressional act of Juen 26, 1834. District was composed of land which formerly had been part of Quincy District lying north of the line separating townships twelve and thirteen north of baseline for fourth principal meridian, as well as small part of Danville District. Federal land surveys in Illinois were authorized by Congressional act (March 26, 1804), when the U. S. Surveyor General was given jurisdiction over all public land north of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi Rivers.
